Angela Habr

Executive Director

 

Angela Habr has been with Strive since March of 2011. Before that she directed GirlPOWER!, a school-based girls’ mentoring program in Bronzeville. Angela, also a certified yoga instructor, completed a B.A. (with honors) in sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2002. After making her way to Chicago in 2003, she began working in Human Resources at the historic Marshall Field’s on State Street. She went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Social Services Administration from the University of Chicago in 2007, and received the Evelyn Harris Ginsburg Memorial Prize.

In her free time, she volunteers in community greening initiatives, oversees construction projects as her building’s condo board president, centers herself through a regular yoga practice, and delights in her time with her husband and daughters.

Janak Paranjape

Program Director

 

Janak has been with Strive since Summer of 2016. Before that he spent 22 years teaching middle school mathematics, language arts and social studies in CPS. Janak grew up attending public schools and playing baseball in Hyde Park. He attended Knox College and holds a Master's Degree in School Leadership from Concordia University in Chicago. His experience is valuable in supporting tutors, developing rich learning experience for students as well as maintaining a positive learning environment at Strive.

OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Larry Bloom

Board President

Larry Bloom is a retired attorney and current President of Harwood Financial Company,an accounts receivable financing company. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago and the University of Chicago Law School. Larry served as Alderman of Chicago's Fifth Ward from 1979 to 1995. He is the former President of KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation in Hyde Park and the current President of the Barclay Condominium Association. Larry is a volunteer tutor with Strive while also serving on its Board of Directors. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Ruth Winter Bloom

Lisa Hodo, Vice President

Lisa has served on the Strive Board since 2004.  
She has worked for United Airlines for 28 years as a flight attendant and also helped design, develop and implement a service center for the airline. Prior to that she was an account executive for WNUA , CBS radio, and Johnson publishing company (Ebony magazine). Her responsibilities included generating new business, developing marketing plans, and promotional opportunities. In her free time she is the fellowship coordinator at Ellis Ave Church. Lisa and her husband live in Hyde Park where they raised their two young-adult daughters.

Pamela Williams, Secretary

Pamela Williams is currently a Deposit Operations Specialists in Chicago, IL.  She supports the deposit operation department in a variety of tasks and projects. She has over 25 years experience in accounts payable, account reconciliation, research and customer service. In her free time, Pamela is an avid community volunteer.   From volunteering as a greeter in the Hyde Park Jazz Festival to assisting with the children’s activity at the 4th on 53rd Street picnic, you’ll see her supporting the community during the year.

Howard Cohn, Director

Howard is Vice-President of Executive Banking at the Hyde Park Bank, a Wintrust Bank, and has held this position for over nine years. Previously, he was co-owner of Cohn & Stern Store for Men, a family business located Hyde Park for nearly 55 years. Howard has served on a number of boards including the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, the Southeast Chicago Commission, the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, Chicago Sinai Congregation and K.A.M. Isaiah Israel. He and his wife have raised their two daughters in Hyde Park and now are proud grandparents.

Katrinka Markowitz, Director

Katrinka Markowitz Buckley has an extensive background in the financial regulatory industry with 35 years of experience as a banking regulator.  In her current position as an Associate Deputy Comptroller Analyst, Katrinka has responsibility for several projects pertaining to financial analysis, quality management, and training and development.  Her strong financial, communication, and project planning skills are positive contributions to Strive's Board.

 Strive's volunteers are essential to our program! Our volunteers come from the surrounding southside Chicago community, many of whom are affiliated with the University of Chicago.
