Our Mission

Strive provides academic assistance, as well as support for social development and cultural awareness for children and youth who have limited educational and financial resources. Our after school and summer programs are designed to:

1) Improve academic achievement
2) Nurture the desire to learn
3) Promote consistent attendance at school
4) Foster a sense of self-esteem, self-discipline, responsibility, and respect for others
5) Facilitate understanding of their own and other cultures
6) Encourage and support greater involvement of parents in their children’s education and development
7) Support and supplement educational programs in our local schools

Our Process

We use internal and external tools, such as test scores and report cards, to gauge our students’ progress. Students and parents set academic goals with tutors, who provide daily feedback on student performance. We recognize that not all success can be measured, evidenced by engaged and joyful tutoring pairs, peer friendships instead of rivalries, and kids striving to do their best.

Who We Are

Strive’s tutors are volunteers from our community, with many coming from the University of Chicago. Our staff and board work to support our volunteers’ one-to-one tutoring and mentorship work and to provide a positive environment for learning.
